A mustache has a strict address: hair on the upper lip, and nowhere else. Not the chin, not the cheeks, not a beard you plan to imagine away later. What would I look like with a mustache depends on the width of the lip and on the empty gap under the nose. Those two measurements decide whether the hair looks like a choice or like a smudge.
The lip, and the gap above it
google/nano-banana-2.1/edit on fal is prompted for hair on the upper lip only. The vendor rate is $0.0336 (Google's 1K list) and stays on the vendor's invoice, not yours. We ask the rest of the face, the head hair, the clothes, and the background to remain. There is no dedicated mustache model and no thickness slider. You get one growth the model considers a mustache.
The gap under the nose is the part amateurs fill in. A long philtrum closed by hair up to the nostrils shortens the look of the nose. Almost no gap means any hair touches the nose and reads heavier. If that skin vanished, the model grew the mustache too high. A little skin left in the gap is usually the more wearable version.
Lip width is the other measurement. A mustache that stops at the corners of the mouth follows the smile line you already have. A mustache that extends past the corners, toward the cheeks, starts to become the top edge of a beard. That extension is the failure mode of this page. The Beard filter is allowed to cover the cheeks. This page is not. If you only want the lip, do not run the beard tool and try to crop the cheeks in your head. You will remember the cheeks anyway, and you will have tested the wrong shape. If the mustache result grows a chin patch, it has also failed, in the direction of the Goatee filter. Chin hair is a different address.
Thickness will flatter. The model prefers a coherent strip, even color, both sides matching. Real mustaches are often lopsided for months, darker on one side, with the center slower than the corners or the reverse. If your current stubble is uneven on the lip, an even result is the optimistic month, not the first month. A pencil-thin line drawn on like makeup is the other miss. It ignores the follicles and follows a cartoon. Neither extreme is a setting you can request.
What the mouth does underneath
We ask the mouth to stay. A mustache does not enlarge the lip or change the Cupid's bow, though it can make a thin lip look more defined by sitting above it, the way a dark eyebrow makes an eye easier to find. That optical lift is fair to notice. A redrawn lip, fuller or differently peaked, is not. Compare the mouth with the hair covered by your thumb. The teeth and the expression should match the upload. This is not the smile tool. A new grin arriving with the mustache means the edit got bored with the lip.
Head hair and sideburns should remain. A mustache pass that also recedes the temples mixed a haircut into a lip question. Glasses matter more than people expect. The lower rim of a frame and the top of a mustache can stack into one dark band, especially with round glasses. Upload the glasses you wear. A result that removes them to show the mustache "clearly" broke the clothes-and-face request. Frames are not the background. They are on the face.
Color usually follows the hair on your head or the stubble in the photo. A black mustache on white hair, or a red one on black hair, is the model making a character. We did not ask for a dye. If the only thing you wanted was the color of facial hair, this is still the wrong expectation. The prompt is presence, not a dye chart.
Photos that show the philtrum
Face the camera, mouth closed or slightly open, the upper lip in focus. A three-quarter view with the lip in shadow hides the gap, and the model will guess the width. Do not cover the mouth with a hand or a cup. Do not upload a full beard and ask this page to trim it down to a mustache. Removal-plus-addition in one breath is how cheeks stay hairy. If you currently wear a beard, use a photo from before it filled in, or accept a muddled edit. Shaving in the picture is the no-beard tool, not a prelude hidden inside this one.
The checkbox says "This is me and I am 18 or older." Adult faces only. Empty files, files over 8 MB, and images under a 256-pixel short edge never reach the model, and a missing checkbox does not either. No charge in those cases. A missing model key fails the same way.

Failures refund the credit or do not consume the proof. How to use the mustache filter is the sequence. The category index is Facial hair. Face blur is local when you need it.
FAQ
What would I look like with a mustache if the gap under my nose is long?
Like someone with a visible philtrum and hair lower down, if the edit leaves that skin. Hair grown all the way to the nostrils shortens the nose visually and usually means the model overfilled the gap.
Why did hair appear on my chin?
Because the edit missed. Chin and cheeks are out of bounds here. A chin patch is a goatee problem. Cheek hair is a beard problem. Neither belongs in this result.
Can I start from a full beard and trim to the lip?
That asks the model to delete and regrow in one pass. It often leaves cheek stubble. Use an image that does not already have the beard, or remove facial hair first and then judge a separate lip.
Will the mustache match my patchy stubble?
Often it will look fuller and more even than month one. Use your current lip stubble as the correction. The shape can still be informative when the density is flattering.
Does the lip itself change?
It should not. A darker line above a thin lip can define it. A new Cupid's bow or a fuller mouth is a face edit. We asked the face to stay. Last updated: 2026-10-08.
